Our caramels now use a new recipe for an even greater taste and whirlwind of effects. During the transition from old to new, I received a new round of edibles in the mail from Ounce of Hope. As a result, I got to try out both formulas – and took detailed notes along the way! Let’s go over what’s changed, what’s staying the same, and what there is to love about our caramel THC edibles.
Why a New Formula for Our Caramel THC Edibles?
In short, the old formula used heavy cream, which is now swapped for evaporated milk. The result is a sweeter treat with a slightly chewier texture, perfect for caramels. While heavy cream has a higher fat content, evaporated milk has a slightly caramelized flavor, so it meshes better with the recipe.
Plus, evaporated milk preserves longer than heavy cream, so the treats stay fresh longer now.
Caramel THC Edibles: First Experience
I received four caramels: two from our old recipe and two from our new one.
The first thing I noticed between the two types was the wrappers. The new wrapper doesn’t cling to the new caramels like its predecessor. Instead, it’s similar to the wrapper for a saltwater taffy. It slid off the caramel easily and made it easier to unwrap.
For the older formula, the wrapper clung to parts of the caramel. If they’d been left outside in their package for too long, this could have become a bigger issue in the heat, so the wrapper change was certainly a smart choice.
What Do They Taste Like?
I started by trying one of each for a taste comparison. I expected the new ones to be much sweeter because of the transition from heavy cream to evaporated milk. However, the tastes are incredibly similar. If you’re already familiar with our other caramels, you might not even taste that we had a formula change!
There’s no denying these are edibles. Expect a clear caramel taste but with hints of the classic cannabis flavor underneath. The weedy taste became more pronounced as I chewed, but it never got overwhelming. The sweet caramel flavor was noticeable enough to remain a delicious treat while I chewed it. I’d confidently say they taste so good that I wanted another. And the first night I ate them, I did just that: I ate another.
Effects from Caramel THC Edibles
Each caramel contains 15mg THC and 15mg CBD. For some, this may seem like a small-dose edible, and others might consider it a moderate amount. Before I tried them, I wasn’t too impressed. I have a heavy tolerance to cannabis, and edibles have rarely ever worked on me, so a blended 1:1 edible? I didn’t have a ton of hope.
In this case, the THC and CBD blend works wonders together. The CBD doesn’t “cancel out” the THC like it might if you take it “after” taking too much THC. Instead, the CBD synergized with the THC and provided a more harmonious, blended effect together.
The effects fully set in around 45 to 50 minutes after eating the two caramels. I noticed the effects before then, so these treats might kick in faster than typical edibles. It getting so stuck in the teeth while you suck and chew on them might have something to do with that, but that’s just my hypothesis! However, the new formula might be more effective.
The effects peaked for 20 minutes at the 50ish-minute mark. I was so stoned I wouldn’t have felt comfortable going outside, so I wouldn’t recommend taking two caramels out the gate like I did. One is more than enough; half or less if you’re very inexperienced with edibles!
After that major cerebral head buzz and body high, I was still stoned, but not nearly as much. I wouldn’t want to be as stoned as I was for that peak 20 minutes the whole time, though. It was a less-than-functional high, an I’m-so-stoned-I’m-not-going-out-in-public kind of high. Once that passed, I was still pleasantly buzzed and genuinely impressed. These caramel THC edibles kicked in better than most other edibles have in my life.
Do the New Caramels Live Up to the Hype? Final Verdict
My final report for the first night is that the new caramels certainly live up to their precursor. The overall effects lasted at least three hours. I took them at 8:25 one night, and I didn’t gather data after I went to sleep, but I did get great rest.
After that first night of honestly taking one too many at a time, I tried a single new caramel by itself the next night. It kicked in about 45 minutes after eating it and was still amplifying. Even with just one caramel, I had to watch every video twice.
But it wasn’t as intense as the night before with one caramel. I felt chill and could’ve reasonably gone out in public. I felt a very cerebral-centered stoned.
Symptom-wise, my back pain subsided after the effects kicked in. About an hour in, my headache, which I’d debated whether to take ibuprofen for or not, also went away.
The final verdict is that these caramels might work even for consumers who think their tolerance is through the roof. The blend of THC and CBD creates an entourage effect that’s hard to beat.
How Many Caramel Edibles Should You Eat?
If you have a low tolerance, I recommend cutting these caramel THC edibles in half for a manageable serving size. Those more familiar with cannabis might enjoy one caramel. Even though they contain an even ratio of THC and CBD, their blended effects offer a whirlwind of fun for consumers.
Start low and go slow. You can always eat more if you don’t notice the effects after an hour or two. Observe the effects it delivers and adjust your serving size as necessary.
Most importantly, enjoy! Whether you’re munching on THC edibles for relief from certain symptoms or for a fun way to pass the time, these caramels are the perfect choice. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
